At any given moment there are more than 300,000 public-sector managers in the United States, the majority of them aspiring to be effective leaders in spite of a predictable expectation from those they lead, and the citizens they answer to, and to accomplish much with fewer resources.
In this project Dr. Solomon Uwadiale has taken a critical in-depth look at leadership challenges, particularly in the public service realm, and the triumphs of successful public leaders, by exploring twelve successful traits:
- A Leader’s Vision
- Decision-making Process
- Personal Values
- Encouragement of Open Debate
- Relationships
- Confidence
- The Power of Influence
- Requirement for Close Advisors
- The Power of Strategy
- Authenticity
- Genuine Connection with People
- Having Effective Communication Skills
In addition the author provides readers with the opportunity to learn from and grow from the experiences of the successful public leaders illustrated in the case studies.
The interviews in the case studies focused on looking at their leadership philosophies; the reasons for them to wake up in the morning to go to work; looking at their call on controversial public policies they formulate or implemented as mandated by their legislature or board of trustees; how they managed critical stakeholders and able to get their goals to come to fruition in spite of all the challenges; how they were able to handle unexpected issues that scared them initially but prevailed at the end; to how they managed opposing clashing opinions that implies controversy, aggravation, and sometimes anger; how they pursued organizational excellence and able to handle some of the secret cows in their organization; their decision-making process and those decisions that they are really proud of and those that they wish they could do it all over again; their advise to up-and-coming leaders and critical strategies they used to promote inclusiveness and most importantly how they relax to maintain necessary balance in their lives.
